Well we have survived the first week without daddy. While it was only a short week (5 sleeps), the boys definitely dealt with the absence of daddy in different ways.
By day two Nathan asked for daddy every five minutes. Seriously, it was every five minutes! Poor kid cried for Daddy every possible moment, especially when he was in trouble. I completely don't understand this as Daddy spanks a lot harder than mommy (per the child himself).
P.S. Son, this isn't something mommy wants to hear. It only results in mommy trying her darndest to spank you as hard as she possible can, without hurting herself.
Drew didn't seem to notice Daddy was gone till it was the day Daddy was coming home. Life went on as usual for him, and neither his sleep nor eating habits appeared to change. Nathan, on the other hand refused to both eat and sleep. It was as if time stood still, and life could no longer exist with Daddy living in another place. While this change in his behavior was very frustrating, it was quite understandable. Dan had been home for three whole months. The kids lived and breathed with both mommy and daddy watching over them. To be quite honest, I was thankful for the chance to miss him. The statement, 'absence makes the heart grow fonder' is not only accurate, but healthy.
Not only did we learn to appreciate daddy, and his ability to fold laundry, cook and wash dinner, take out the trash and mow the lawn, but we also learned who kept the reins in check. It was interesting to watch the kids respond to mommy, just mommy - all the time. Daddy was not there to reinforce, or step in, or to back me up. It was all me. While this separation was by no means fun, it definitely taught us a lot in just the first week. Unfortunately, there will be many more weeks to come, as our transition to Colorado continues. Stay tuned.
