Pit Stop - Charleston, SC

On our way up to Virgina for Thanksgiving, we decided to take a pit stop in Charleston, SC where Dan and I lived for 18 months. Since we left four years ago, we have always talked about going back to some of our favorite restaurants and to see our first house. We were so excited that we were going to be able to show the boys the battery, and also allow them a break from the 14 hr car trip.

We left on Monday morning, around naptime, and were thrilled that the boys napped so well for us. By the time they woke up we had only two hours of driving till we arrived in Charleston. We were not only thrilled that they were so entertained the first leg of the trip, but also that we were going to be able to go to dinner in Charleston! When we first moved to Charleston, 6 mos after being married, we lived out of a hotel for 36 days. To say we ate out was an understatement! We had a lofty food budget, and we didn't let it go to waste! We ate very well, and have often reflected on all of the good food we ate in Charleston! SO, to be able to go back there for not one meal, but two was a treat!

Hyman's Seafood, downtown, was hand's down, Dan's favorite restaurant. One of our first nights in Charleston 5 years ago, we ate at Hyman's and Dan fell in love with their fried lobster tails. We ate there several times over the course of the 18 mos that we lived there - and I was thrilled that we would be able to go back for Dan's sake. Everything was the same, the boiled peanuts on the table (which the boys suprisingly liked), the same famous people plaques on the table, the delicious fried shrimp, great french fries and the even better fried lobster tails(according to Dan).

We were so nervous to spend our first night in a hotel with the boys, all in one room. We were so shocked at how well they did and how much fun it was. The kids were tired, and ready for bed, so by the time we put them in their beds, and turned off the lights they went to sleep without a peep! It was wonderful. The next morning as the boys woke up it was so sweet to hear them call for one another. It was even better to be able to bring them into bed with us and snuggle for a little bit.

The weather was drizzling and rainy when we woke up Tuesday morning, but that wasn't going to stop us from showing the boys the big guns and the battery. As we began to drive thru downtown the boys enjoyed seeing the big, old churches, the horses and carriages, and especially the GUNS! They were thrilled to be able to get out of the car and go play on them.

After playing around on the battery, we drove over to the big Patriot's Point Maritime Museum to view the USS Yorktown. The boys were in awe that airplanes could take off on a boat. Airplanes, boats, and guns - they were in heaven!

After a long morning playing with big guns, and looking at boats and airplanes, we were all ready for lunch. We headed up to Summerville to take a peak at our first house, and then off to my favorite restaurant, Gilligans. We were thrilled to see the old neighborhood, and see how much everything had grown and matured. (When we lived there everything was brand new) Our house had been well taken care of, and many of our landscaping had stayed the same. It was such a sweet little house where many fond memories were made. Here is a pict when we first bought it.

My favorite restaurant, Gilligan's happened to be right around the corner, so we filled our tummies with shrimp before another 6 hr car trip to VA. We must have done a great job wearing out the boys, because they slept for over 3 hrs in the car! It was so wonderful to have that quite time just driving and talking! By the time they woke up we were almost there, and dinner in the car and a quick little movie occupied their minds and mouths for the last half of the trip there.
