Our last day in Steamboat we went to the Wild West Air Fest. The kids and I had never been to an airshow and we didn't know quite what to expect. I knew their would be airplanes and the kids would enjoy that, but I wasn't sure how long that would last.
As we walked into the show the boys were over the top excited. There were airplanes taking off on the strip in front of us, a helicopter landing, and twenty or so airplanes all lined up in front of us. AND, to top that off, they had all sorts of old cars to look at as well.
Of course the loud and fast airplanes taking off/landing caught their attention first. We headed straight to the runway to watch them take off. The loudest and most prominent airplane was a old bi-plane. It wasn't enough that he was taking off and landing frequently, but he had to buzz the airfield as well with each passenger. It was incredibly loud, but oh so cool! I think I was just as excited as the kids!
Almost all of the planes had signs on them for how much to sit in the plane, or take a ride in it....except for one nice gentleman who literally flagged us over from another plane so that they boys could sit in his. He was so kind and thoroughly enjoyed showing off his plane to the kids. He knew that from their early age, he could influence them towards aviation by opening up his plane for free to anyone and everyone. He allow the boys to push, pull, put on everything....and then loved every second of it!
After looking through all of the planes and cars we venture down to the hanger for the kids. They had three different types of planes that the kids could make and take....one with candy, one wooden one, and then a rocket!! We ALL had a blast! The kids weren't quite coordinated enough to make the rockets go, so Dan and I stepped in to help - and enjoyed shooting them all over the hanger. It gave me great ideas for a birthday party some year!
As if that wasn't enough fun for one day, we proceeded to drive five hours home....just in time for the Colorado Springs Balloon Glow. The boys had been off schedule all week due to the hotel and trip - so we figured we'd just lump it all in together. It was totally worth it! We met my parents down there shortly after dinner and got their just in time. The boys were so intrigued with the balloons from a distance, but were quite leery of them the close we walked. Thankfully they were sitting on Pop pop and Daddy's shoulders and couldn't escape!
